During the What the Tweet event, we capture a bunch of questions that we’re going to take a shot at answering here in the coming days and weeks. For the first “lesson”, we’ll walk through the process of checking to see if your social media ‘namespace’ is available and look at how we would secure that namespace on one particular social media service.
Thanks, Dana, for your insight on securing social media namespace. I found the site namechk.com very helpful. One quick question for you… I noticed that in Facebook, multiple users are able to use the same “handle” or “username”. Is this correct?
Yes, sort of… the Facebook address with the ‘duplicate’ handle/namespace will resolves to a URL that has the name in it along with the FB code that is unique to your profile/fan page. For example, if there were another Kavarna in Green Bay, the code at the end of the page would differ.
What the *Tweet* is Social Media is hosted by the Green Bay Area Chamber of Commerce. For information about the chamber or for further event details please use the contact information below.

Getting a Facebook vanity URL, such as http://www.facebook.com/coca-cola, is all but impossible for all but the largest brands at this point.
